Karaite Korner New Moon Report February 1999 Part 1 On Wednesday 17/2/99 observers from Jerusalem were unable to sight the New Moon due to poor weather conditions. It was completetly overcast. An observer from the Tel Aviv area also reported not seeing the moon due to poor weather conditions. Given the astronomical conditions (Illumination 1.47% and Lagtime 79 minutes) the moon should have been visible from Israel on this evening, possibly even before sun set, had there been better weather conditions. On the previous evening (16/2/99) the astronomical conditions were such (Illumination .01% and Lagtime 17 minutes) that the moon was definitely not visible from Israel and this can be said with 100% certainty. See Magdi Shamuel's article on the Calendar for an explanation of the astronomical terms and considerations at: Karaite Calendar by Magdi Shamuel

On Wednesday 17 February, 1999 observers looked for the moon from Jerusalem, Ofakim, Ranen, near Ashdod, and Petah Tikvah. There were heavy clouds in all the locations and the moon was not seen.
